SWEPSTONE & NEWTON

Newton Burgoland Primary School
After a recent visit from the Local Authority the school has been graded ‘good, with many
outstanding features’. This is a fantastic achievement by the children, teachers, parents and
governors. 2009 will provide the opportunity to build on this further and achieve ‘excellent’
status.

The school has  a choir and dance club. Both performed at Swepstone Church at the
Christmas crib service and it was great to see all the hard work pay off. Particular thanks to
Trisha Newbold who ran the show!

School meals are provided via Ibstock Community College. This facility has enabled the
continuation of supply to our small village school.

A number of charities have benefited from recent fund raising. These include £27 to Ragtex,
£18.10 to Poppy Appeal, £177.24 to Shoebox Appeal.
The Parents and Friends Association (PFA) recently held a ‘Winter Wonderland’ school disco
which raised £190.30, all of which will be ploughed back into the school. The event really
kicked off the festive season.
The PFA have also recently organised a visit from a pantomime group, and are looking at
funding a circus skills workshop, educational equipment/visits and dressing up clothes for the
youngest children in the future. It’s great to see the funds going to such a variety of projects
and further information can be found on the school website below, under the PFA web link.

New after school activities are planned for 2009 inc judo, volleyball and a science workshop.
This is in addition to the numerous clubs already in place.

The school bird watchers have been busy. £89.60 has been raised to help fund materials for
a bird hide.

Everyone involved in the garden are looking forward to building on the tremendous progress
made last year. Continued, structured involvement of the children is planned.

Some of the pupils recently took part in a local swimming gala against other schools and won
the trophy!  An excellent achievement.
All are welcome to visit the schools web site http://www.newburland.leics.sch.uk/

Snarestone Tote Events Calendar 2009
following provisional dates have been set for Tote events in 2009: -
April 12th - Village Duck Race – ducks will go on sale during March
June 27th - Mystery Trip – 2009 marks 50 years of the Village Tote, and to celebrate this
fantastic achievement the committee are hoping to make this year’s trip even more special
than previous years. Great weather and the coach have already been booked, just the small
matter of choosing a location left to do! The trip is free to both village children and Senior
Citizens (plus they receive some spending money) so why not beat the credit crunch and put
the trip in your diary now? A great day out for both children and adults. Full details to follow.
November 7th Bonfire Night
December 12th Children & OAP’s Christmas Party. Again, this event is free to Children and
Senior Citizens.
The Mystery Trip and Village trip are both paid for from funds raised by the weekly Tote draw,
the duck race and the bonfire night at The Globe. If you would like to join the Tote, at least
one of the committee can be found at The Globe on a Sunday evening and will be happy to
explain how it works.

APPLEBY

News from Sir John Moore School
By now, we are well into the Spring Term and everyone is working very hard.  Our Christmas
concerts – Born in a Barn and Peace Child - were much enjoyed by audience and children
alike and the children completed the term with a quiet and reflective Lessons and Carols at
Church.
This term we are running an evening for our parents and parents from Snarestone School on
how to protect our children from the dangers of cyber bullying.
We are also holding an open evening in February on how parents can help their children with
reading and writing.  This is part of our 'Aiming for Excellence' drive, as we are working
towards achieving excellent outcomes for all children.
Edward Adams, a Year 6 pupil, is working hard to support the RSPB with their project to save
the Albatross.  The Albatross is in danger of extinction through fishing and the RSPB is
raising money for special alarms to keep the Albatrosses from the nets.  We are collecting
any loose change and any used stamps – so if you have either of these, the school would
love to receive them.
Dog Owners: Clear it up! Young children are particularly vulnerable to illness spread
through dog faeces. They are also less aware of where they put their feet! As society
encourages children to walk more, it is even more necessary for dog owners to be vigilant.
School teachers should not have to take time inspecting and cleaning children’s shoes after
walks/runs: it is your responsibility to clean up after your dog. And not just on paved areas,
but in any public place, including footpaths over fields. PLEASE clean it up, for the sake of the
children.

Appleby Magna / SJMF 2009 Film Project
This proposal seeks funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to finance the production of a film
covering social, cultural and educational events based at both the Sir John Moore Foundation
and throughout the wider village of Appleby.  The film may also look at businesses based in
and around Appleby Magna. A DVD will be distributed in a professionally packaged design to
every household in Appleby Parish. It is envisaged that the film will also be accessible via
internet streaming and/or downloading technologies.
The main aim in creating the film, recording key village-based and Foundation-based events
is to increase community participation across all age ranges within the local community. If
funding can be put in place soon, filming will take place over the next 18 months or so. Music
will be a key part of the editorial effort to engage with all age groups viewing the DVD. The
projected film/DVD duration will be approximately 60 minutes.
If you are planning an event or events which you think might be visually interesting –
watchable! - , and /or of general interest, please email any initial information to me, as below.
Any feedback will be welcomed.  If the project proceeds, the film will be managed by
Birmingham-based television production company, Hotbed Media Limited. Thanks very much.

MARCH AT 2pm when arrangers can chose their site and title.

this year so let’s make it a great success!

Appleby Magna Parish Council
Yet again the Parish Council has received many complaints about dog fouling in and around
the village.  One area of great concern is the public footpath between Top Street and Church
Street, which is used daily by children attending school.  All the school children use this
footpath when attending events at the church and on several occasions teachers have had to
clean dog excrement from children’s shoes.  This can present a serious health hazard to
young children containing disease and parasites including the toxcoara worm!  Not picking up
dog excrement in open fields stops livestock grazing on the grass! The Parish Council are
urging the District Council to install bins at either end of this public footpath.  All efforts by
the community to enjoy a clean and safe environment will have no effect if
irresponsible dog owners do not clean up after their pets!
The cost of vandalism since April 2008 is £1,568.  Please report any vandalism to the Police,
you can telephone Crimestoppers anonymously without charge on 0800 555 111.
The next meetings of the Parish Council will be held on Thursday 5th March and Thursday
2nd April at 7.30pm in the Sir John Moore Heritage Centre. All members of the public are
encouraged to attend the meetings and will be made most welcome.

In November 2008 a survey of members of the Womens Institute revealed that nearly half knew personally someone who had suffered a violent attack and that nearly a third of these incidents were causes of domestic violence. They felt that women in rural areas were particularly vulnerable to abuse. Each year 29,000 women in Leicestershire will experience domestic violence but only one in five will report it to the police
